Our Lady of Atonement - Card

Our Lady of Atonement is an illustration of Mary holding Jesus who is holding a black cross, to remind us of his Passion. As I studied several different depictions and the symbolism behind the imagery, I realized what this image means to me. She is based on Our Lady of Sorrows. Through her sorrows, through Jesus' passion and death, we are reminded WHY. It is not a lighthearted image. So many depictions of Theotokos are of Mary cradling baby Jesus but here she carries him on her back. The occasion this card may be appropriate is for mourning, apologies, and sympathy.
The original illustration was created with watercolor and gouache, greatly inspired by families from Guatemala. I then photographed it and edited it in Photoshop for a full card format, imitating stained glass.
